The sweeping views on our recent trip to Canyonlands National Park in Moab, Utah, were well worth the slightly harrowing hike around the park’s Needles district. Though we steered clear of the area of Canyonlands where Aron Ralston — the inspiration for the movie 127 Hours — found himself trapped in 2003, we still encountered (and conquered!) crevasses and ladders. Moab is a scenic five-hour drive from Salt Lake City and Park City, and well worth the trip for hiking, mountain biking, sky gazing or exploring the downtown art galleries. As desert temperatures drop and foliage blazes against the red rocks, fall is the perfect time to go.
